Alpine Blackbird PMD-B100 Review
Both the internal speaker and the one embedded in the mounting cradle were good enough for voice-guided directions, but music sounded tinny and lacked bass response. However, the FM modulator worked wonderfully.

CNET Reviews the Alpine Blackbird PMD-B100 and gives out”The good:The Alpine Blackbird features preloaded maps on its hard drive and includes a music player, an FM modulator, and a traffic receiver.—The bad: The Alpine Blackbird lacks text-to-speech functionality and requires a separate flash memory card to play music. The screen can be difficult to read in direct sunlight, and the internal battery has a woefully short life between charges.—The bottom line: The Alpine Blackbird is a feature-rich vehicle GPS system and entertainment device all rolled into one sharp-looking package, but it hits a couple of roadblocks with its short battery life and sluggish route calculation.”

I was suprised to see some bad reviews about this unit because this thing is great. Here are the gists:
Pro:
- Large bright screen
- touch screen (this is a MUST now a days)
- Sleek design: this thing looks beautiful compared to the clunky design of others like magallen or garmin
- VERY FAST calculation time (only a second or two to reroute) (by the way, my unit prompted me to do a U-turn everytime it was legal)
- very fast input time. It seems that Alpine uses a better algorithm (or simply faster clock) for anticipating possible street names. I inputted letters like I was typing it in a computer keyboard)
- mp3 player works flawlessly: For those of you who do not know much about this unit, this thing has an SD/MMC card slot so that you can just pop your SD card full of music and then broadcast it with built-in FM transmitter to listen to music while on the go. Very useful.

Alpine PMD-B200 Blackbird II Review
We tested the Alpine PMD-B200 in San Francisco, and from a cold start, it took the unit about 2 minutes to get a lock on our position under partly cloudy skies, while subsequent starts were faster.

Cnet Reviews the Alpine PMD-B200 Blackbird II and gives out”The good: The Alpine PMD-B200 features a large, sharp touch screen and offers text- and voice-guided directions, a comprehensive points-of-interest database, and a music player. The system also has good Bluetooth integration for use with a compatible phone, and it automatically syncs your mobile’s address book and call-history list.—The bad: The BlackBird II doesn’t support text-to-speech functionality, and it’s somewhat pricey. Route recalculations didn’t always provide the most efficient route and sometimes had us going in circles.—The bottom line: The Alpine PMD-B200 is a decent portable navigation system, with good Bluetooth integration and traffic services. But the lack of text-to-speech functionality and inefficient route recalculations doesn’t make it worth the high price tag.”
